There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays: 8 December Home Maintenance Tips
Tis the season…for home maintenance?! Okay, okay…that’s definitely not the highlight of the season. However, Texas winters are definitely hard on your home and a bit of prevention goes a long way this time of year. Part II – Building Wealth with Real Estate Part II: Rental Property
This article was also published with permission from Lisa Priest in the Saturday, November 22, 2014 edition of the Palestine Herald Press.
A “buy and hold” investment strategy is just like it sounds—buy it and hold it (typically as income-producing rental property). Rental property is a great way to create monthly income and will also yield a payoff should you ever decide to sell. The market in Palestine right now is ripe with investment opportunities for anyone wishing to get into the “rental game.”

Boxwoods are a common landscaping shrub and can be found in almost every neighborhood (and probably every street) in Palestine. You may not know what a boxwood is off the top of your head, but you’ll recognize it in the pics, I promise!
These low-cut boxwoods are typical of the landscaping style in Palestine, Texas. I bet you recognize them now! 😉 Image: ian munroe via Flickr
Oh…boxwoods…I have a love-hate relationship with them. Don’t get me wrong…I am not a complete boxwood hater. Well, maybe I am. The photo above is a great use of boxwoods–they are clean and crisply manicured and they definitely add interest to the landscaping. I like boxwoods when they are not the ONLY landscaping in a yard and when they are mixed in with other (preferably blooming) shrubs. However, boxwoods can also date a house, especially when it is the only shrubbery in sight. This is a prime example of the dating effect that boxwoods can have (the green shutters don’t help either, but that’s another post 😉 ): Continue reading

It’s that time of year where ghosts, goblins and witches are everywhere. The tombstones are in the yards and they might even have a pile of bones sticking out for dramatic effect. It’s a fun and escapist time of year and one of my favorites, for sure. Everyone loves a haunted house at Halloween, but what if it is a real-life “haunted” house? What does it mean when you want to sell your “haunted” house? Does a ghost add $5,000 to the asking price? Does the ghost need to pay rent?
Questions on property taxes and property tax exemptions are some that I get asked by clients regularly. How much will my taxes be? What discounts am I eligible for? Why should I file for an exemption? All are excellent questions and well worth asking!
Generally speaking, property taxes are determined and collected on the local level. In Palestine, property taxes are managed by the Anderson County Appraisal District (ACAD). I won’t get into how property taxes are determined for the purposes of this post, but just know that ACAD is the one that determine your property’s appraisal value (another important note: YOUR PROPERTY TAX APPRAISAL IS NOT FAIR MARKET VALUE!!—but that’s another convo for another day…haha!)
An easy way to understand property tax exemptions is to think of them as “property tax discounts.” Continue reading
